i left for some time. and when i came back, some things have changed. so subtly and yet swiftly, i haven’t even noticed up until now.
not until after several issues cropped up. that i’ve realized that something really happened when i left.
they changed. or rather, we are now changing. adapting, transforming.
i can’t believe it’s happened so fast.
how pivotal that...
stagnant loves
see. we’re hopeless. we already know that.
but you can never take away our longing. and with it, our desire, our hope.
so we’re not necessarily hopeless. maybe deluded. or impractical.
but we still love.

AUSTIN KLEON: Don't steal the style, steal the... →
austinkleon:
Caught this NPR piece with columnist Crawford Kilian who advises young writers to avoid novels like On The Road and Catcher in The Rye, because they’re too good, and their styles are “so seductive” that they might “seduce a young writer into imitating them.”
God forbid!

drink coffee like water.
i can’t drink coffee casually. or tea. or anything hot. by casually, i mean, like the way you drink water, sipping it in a glass. or a cup. or a mug, or whatever holds that water for you.
if i’m going to drink coffee (or anything hot actually), i need a spoon. before i take a sip, i have to huff and puff before it while i gauge whether it’s cool enough not to scald my tongue....

black saturday.
my mind:
denies all the horrible things that can happen in the future
denies them but thinks about them from time to time
denies that they can’t happen
denies that but can’t shake off the feeling that they might
denies that feeling they might happen

but then my...

shizznizzle:
I was on my lunch break today and decided to hit the mall since it’s just one block away from my office. On my 1 hour lunch break, I usually get some grub and walk around shops to kill time…however for some odd reason I decided to take a stroll first and eat later. So, I was just walking around…

AUSTIN KLEON: Orwell’s “dos” vs. Orwell’s “don’ts” →
austinkleon:
Shaun at Lists of Note recently posted George Orwell’s “Rules for Writers” from his incredible “Politics and the English Language”:
Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
Never use a long word where a short one will do.

Culturomics Looks at the Birth and Death of Words →
infoneer-pulse:
Can physicists produce insights about language that have eluded linguists and English professors? That possibility was put to the test this week when a team of physicists published a paper drawing on Google’s massive collection of scanned books. They claim to have identified universal laws governing the birth, life course and death of words.
The paper marks an advance in a new...

austinkleon:
“Art is a lie that tells the truth.” With so many quotes attributed to Picasso, it’s hard to track down where they actually came from, or whether they were even said at all.
In 1923, Picasso talked about cubism with an American critic named Marius de Zayas. The discussion was translated (with his approval) and published as “Picasso Speaks,” in The Arts. What Picasso is really...
